Preparing for winter

Today was a busy, crazy, fun day!  We started off writing with our dry-erase boards.  Lucy worked on her name.  She has decided that she wants to be Lucy instead of Luciana because she doesn't like having an A in her name.

Zoe is working on "-ap" words.  She looked through her word family book and then we tried to think of all the words we could write without erasing the -ap on her board.

Then, we did some reading.  Zoe read this book about "busy, busy squirrels" and did really well.  It took us a long time, but she stuck with it.  She is doing great at both sounding out words and remembering sight words.  She was very proud of herself and showed the book to her Dad after work but said, " I'm just showing it to you, not reading it again because it was too long!"

Our "Click" magazine (an GREAT science magazine if you're in the market for one) was also on how animals prepare for the winter, so we had some interesting discussions.  They were fascinated with a rabbit whose fur turns white in the winter so the foxes think he is snow when they walk by.

We practiced counting to 100 by 1's, 5's, and 10's using our abacus.  Lucy enjoyed taking turns.

Then, mom needed to shower before dance class so Lucy played with our new sensory bin!  She examined, sorted, counted, and had a ball.

And Zoe practiced sight words on the iPad.  Love the iPad selfishly but also for homeschool.  Love.  It.

This is the ballerina lion and her fierce companion ready for dance class.

After a fun playdate, rest, and supper, we started decorating the tree (except almost all the lights were burned out) but some Christmas cookies and sprinkles made us forget our troubles!
