We were back in the saddle again today...mostly. We started our semester with a trip to the pediatrician. Zoe has a sinus infection. Poor kid. After dance class and a lunch complete with Barbie readers (thanks Grana!), we got down to some quick business. In the afternoon, we had lots of practical life skill building as we cleaned out and organized both girls' closets and did some problem-solving to figure out how we can keep them a little neater.
We are still working on the idea of number concept. Everyone got 5 buttons on their tray and we confirmed that there were still 5 even if they made a big circle, little circle, etc. They both needed to count each time even though Zoe got the concept that I wasn't taking away or adding any. Fascinating. Then we did some easy addition and subtraction.
While Zoe did her written math, Lucy and I did some of her thinking skills book. Love this series. She doesn't enjoy writing, coloring, or doing pages of work (not that she should) so this type of activity works really well for us.
Then came one of our best moments we've had so far. While Zoe was still finishing her math, I reached over and handed Lucy a word family flip book. I showed her how to sound out "cat" and just figured she would play with it. That girl flipped every page and sounded out every word. It blew me away because we haven't worked one time on sounding out words. She was watching Zoe read at lunch like a hawk so it made me give it a try. So glad I did. Zoe and I made a big deal of it and she was really proud.
We played the much anticipated rainbow game twice. There is some good math logic built in and they enjoyed it. Why can't game companies make spinners that actually spin?
Lucy was keeping track of her rainbow points, and she said "2 + 2 is 4! I need to go check and see." So she ran over to the table and pretended to write something down. That girl cracks me up.
Zoe has been asking all about germs, sharing germs, being sick, etc. We read Germs Make Me Sick and talked about how our body fights off germs (Zoe especially was fascinated!). Lucy worked this puzzle while we read.
Sure, Lucy read her first words today, but Zoe looked fabulous. We made 10 of these scarves as gifts for Christmas.
