F is for Freeze

Today, Lucy practiced making letters and Zoe practiced spelling with our dry erase boards.  Zoe easily spelled cat, mat, lucy, zoe, mom, dad, big, bug, and ship!

We also did some "f is for fish" measuring using goldfish.  We talked about careful measurement, longest, shortest, and medium while we worked on number formation.

Then, we continued our learning about water.
We looked in the freezer...to find that some favorite toys had been frozen in ice!

Zoe was very concerned because this was her Polly Pocket with the painted nails.

We discussed ways we could get the toys out.  Lucy tried biting it (this was my favorite method).

Both girls got scissors and tried to cut the ice off.  They even tried using my big scissors.

We decided to make the ice melt.
We heated Lucy's toy on the stove (using a double broiler method for visibility).

After a few minutes of careful observation, the seahorse was free!

We didn't have time to do the same to poor Polly, but we wondered what would happen if we left her while we went to dance.  We predicted that the ice would melt like the cubes from last week.
We were relieved to see her free when we got home!  And it didn't even chip her manicure.
